Overview
The Representative Payee program is administered by the Social Security Administration. The Arc of New Mexico is an approved Organizational Payee service that assists individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities who are unable to manage their own funds. We help by maintaining a direct deposit account for the beneficiary’s Social Security, Veteran, or Railroad Board benefit checks.

The Arc of New Mexico is a corporate representative payee authorized by policies established by the Social Security Administration. Representative payee services provide a mechanism to allow individuals with developmental disabilities to better access and manage their socual security benefits. The program is designed to insure that an individual’s benefits are properly managed and used for the benefit and interest of the individual. Representative payee services at The Arc of New Mexico include paying bills, issuing checks for allowances, and helping individuals save their money in ways that preserver their benefits.
Getting Services
The Arc of New Mexico Rep Payee program services a specific regional area of the state as allowed by Social Security. Interested individuals, their families or their guardian may contact The Arc to request a packet of information to establish an account.
As Rep Payee, The Arc of New Mexico is responsible for paying for individual’s basic needs and obligations. This includes expenses for housing, food, clothing, medical care, and personal spending. A budget is established with input from the client and/or their guardian allocating these amounts on a weekly or monthly basis. Within the budget, the representative payee may set aside a portion of each month’s income into “conserved funds” for special purchases. These funds are basically a savings account, and once the amount needed for the purchase is reached, these funds are used to make one-time purchases.
Most individuals receive a regularly scheduled allotment for their personal spending, directly to a debit card. Rep Payees also assist clients with budgeting for larger purchases or opening special needs trusts and/or ABLE accounts.
